Pompeii: An Ancient Roman City Frozen in Time
Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site located in the Campania region of southern Italy, near modern-day Naples. It is an ancient Roman city famously buried under 4 to 6 meters of volcanic ash and pumice during the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. This remarkably preserved 170-acre site offers an unparalleled glimpse into daily life in the Roman Empire, featuring intact buildings, intricate frescoes, and plaster casts of victims that have survived nearly 2,000 years.
