House of the Vettii: Frescoes and a Practical Visiting Guide
The House of the Vettii, or Casa dei Vettii, is an urban Roman house in Regio VI, Insula 15, known for its painted rooms and garden. It offers a different experience from the civic buildings around the Forum: the decoration shows how wealth and identity could be presented within a home. Check the Park’s building-specific hours before fitting it into your route.
What should you look for?
Start with the relationship between the entrance, the interior spaces and the garden. Instead of rushing from one famous painting to the next, consider what a visitor moving through the house would encounter and which rooms command attention.
The Park’s official description of the house identifies the owners as Aulus Vettius Restitutus and Aulus Vettius Conviva, freedmen who acquired wealth through commerce. Its account connects the entrance image of Priapus with prosperity and describes the decorated rooms around the peristyle garden.
| Feature | What to notice | Context to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Priapus near the entrance | A conspicuous image encountered at the threshold | The Park connects it with prosperity; it is more than an isolated provocative picture |
| Cupid frieze | Small figures carrying out productive activities | The official account identifies work such as wine selling, goldworking and perfume making |
| Peristyle garden | The arrangement of rooms around an open centre | View decoration and domestic space together rather than treating the house as a gallery |
| Service spaces | The difference between display rooms and working areas | A wealthy household included people whose experiences were very different from its owners’ |
The paintings should not be used to invent detailed biographies for people whose lives are only partially documented. For another example of evidence and interpretation, our Pompeii graffiti guide distinguishes inscriptions from modern retellings.
Is it included in a normal Pompeii ticket?
Admission information checked October 28, 2026. The house is in the ancient city; the official ticket page lists Pompeii Express as covering that area. The suburban-villas distinction concerns places such as the Villa of the Mysteries, not a separate Vettii admission product.
A ticket covering the city does not guarantee that every house or room is open. Use the Park’s open-buildings list for the current house timetable, and our ticket guide for the wider product comparison. Do not buy a second ticket solely because a reseller markets a “House of the Vettii tour”: that offer may be selling guiding rather than a separate site admission.
Fit the house into a four-hour visit
Our four-hour suggested itinerary groups the Forum, baths, House of the Faun, House of the Vettii and theatre district. It gives you a starting sequence, not a fixed-duration promise. Closures, heat, uneven paving and time spent looking at paintings can change the pace substantially.
Prioritize the Vettii early enough that you can accommodate a temporary queue or a building-specific cutoff. If the house is unavailable, use the official map to choose another open stop without repeatedly crossing the site.
The size guide explains why the ancient city’s area is not the same as the area visitors can enter on a particular day.
Practical considerations inside the house
Some images are explicitly sexual. Families can decide how much context to discuss before entering rather than being surprised at the doorway. Treat the paintings as historical evidence within a domestic setting.
Follow the Park’s visitor regulations and staff directions for photography, bags and access. Keep movement through narrow spaces clear; do not touch painted surfaces or step beyond barriers for a photograph. Check any equipment restrictions before carrying a tripod or other bulky kit.
