Pompeii Train Stations: Which Stop and Entrance to Choose

Quick answer

Use Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri on the EAV Naples–Sorrento line for Porta Marina or Piazza Esedra. Pompei Santuario is the EAV Naples–Poggiomarino stop for Piazza Anfiteatro. Pompei is a separate Trenitalia station in the modern town, with an onward walk or Pompei Link connection to the archaeological park.

Choose Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri for Porta Marina or Piazza Esedra. Choose Pompei Santuario for an EAV journey toward Piazza Anfiteatro. Pompei, without “Scavi” or “Santuario,” is the separate Trenitalia station in the modern town. All three can serve a visit to the ruins, but they are different destinations when buying a ticket.

Last updated and official sources checked: 10 October 2026. PompeiiItaly.org is an independent visitor guide. Railway service notices and Park entry instructions take priority over this planning advice.

Match the station to your entrance

The Archaeological Park's official directions identify the following rail approaches. “Circumvesuviana” refers to the local railway network operated by EAV.

Station to look for Railway route Park entrance to plan around Onward journey
Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri EAV Naples–Sorrento Porta Marina or Piazza Esedra Walk from the station to your chosen gate
Pompei Trenitalia Naples–Salerno Piazza Anfiteatro for the town approach Walk or check the Pompei Link connection
Pompei Santuario EAV Naples–Poggiomarino Piazza Anfiteatro Walk through the modern town

The station name belongs on your rail booking. The entrance name belongs in your walking directions and any tour meeting instructions. Save both: a search for “Pompeii entrance” can send you somewhere other than the gate you intended.

If your visit starts with a guided tour, choose the station after checking its meeting point. If you need the facilitated visitor route, plan around its entrance and the accessibility of the entire journey. Our Pompeii entrance guide helps with that choice.

Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri: Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra

Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri is the EAV stop on the Naples–Sorrento line. The Park's directions pair it with Porta Marina, on Via Villa dei Misteri, and Piazza Esedra, at Piazza Porta Marina Inferiore. You may also see the shortened name “Pompei Villa dei Misteri” in official directions.

Check the train's destination and stopping pattern before boarding. A Naples departure alone does not identify the correct EAV route. Use the EAV railway timetable hub and its service notices for your date rather than an old screenshot or a copied departure time.

Once you arrive, follow signs toward your selected Park entrance. Keep a tour meeting location separate from the entrance itself: meeting outside a station or a business is different from meeting at the Park gate. Contact the operator if its voucher is unclear.

For the full journey from your base, use our Sorrento to Pompeii guide or Naples day-trip guide. This station comparison is for choosing the arrival point; those guides cover the departure-side decisions.

Pompei: the Trenitalia station in the modern town

The station named simply Pompei is on the Naples–Salerno railway. It is not another name for Pompei Scavi. A route to this station can be perfectly suitable, provided you include the onward trip to the archaeological entrance.

The Park lists the mainline Pompei station as an approach to Piazza Anfiteatro. Set your walking destination to Piazza Anfiteatro, Piazza Immacolata, using the address on the official directions page. Check the route against your luggage, mobility and appointment time before deciding to walk.

The same Park page describes Pompei Link as a combined train-and-bus connection between Pompei station and the archaeological park. Check the available connection and its ticket conditions for your actual date. Do not assume a railway ticket to Pompei includes the onward bus, or that its drop-off matches a tour's meeting place.

When comparing journey planners, read the itinerary details rather than choosing the first result labelled “Pompei.” Confirm the operator, exact arrival station, any connection, and the final walking leg. A shorter rail journey is not necessarily the easier door-to-gate journey.

Pompei Santuario: a different EAV line

Pompei Santuario is the EAV stop the Park lists for Piazza Anfiteatro on the Naples–Poggiomarino line. It is distinct from both the Trenitalia Pompei station and the EAV Pompei Scavi stop.

This distinction matters before you board: Naples–Poggiomarino and Naples–Sorrento are different routes. Confirm that the particular departure stops at your intended station using EAV's current timetable. After arrival, use the Park's Piazza Immacolata address for the approach to Piazza Anfiteatro.

Do not choose Santuario solely because the word sounds familiar from a hotel address or a town attraction. Choose it because the rail route and entrance work together for your visit.

Accessibility can depend on travel direction

Check both the outward and return legs before committing to a station. EAV publishes specific mobility-access instructions for Pompei Villa dei Misteri; its arrangements differ by direction of travel. Do not infer that a station is accessible in both directions because one platform has a suitable approach.

Separately, the Park's visitor information directs visitors with mobility difficulties to the “Pompeii for All” route from Piazza Anfiteatro. Station access and access inside the ruins are separate checks. Confirm assistance and onward transport with the relevant operator where needed.

Campania Express is currently suspended

As checked on 10 October 2026, EAV's Campania Express notice says the service is suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice. Older descriptions of its tourist service and departure timetable should not be used as proof that it is running.

Use EAV's live railway information to assess ordinary services, or compare a mainline journey to Pompei with the onward connection. If you already hold a Campania Express booking, the same notice explains the refund route, including contacting the original seller for externally purchased tickets.

If you arrive at a different station than expected

Check the station sign before changing trains or buying another ticket. At Pompei or Pompei Santuario, first assess the approach to Piazza Anfiteatro. At Pompei Scavi, assess Porta Marina or Piazza Esedra. Confirm that your Park booking or tour arrangements allow the entrance you are considering.

If you have a fixed tour meeting point, contact the operator promptly with your exact station name. Allow time to revise the route; do not assume you can cross the archaeological site to a meeting point before admission.

Before leaving your accommodation, save the full station names, return itinerary, entrance address and ticket confirmations offline. Keep transport and admission documents separate. The official Pompeii ticket guide explains Park entry: a transport booking should never be treated as archaeological admission unless its terms explicitly include it.
