Pompeii in Winter: Opening Hours and a Flexible Visit Plan

Quick answer

Pompeii can suit a winter visit if you plan around earlier closing and keep your route flexible. From 15 October to 15 March, the Park lists opening at 09:00, last entry at 15:30 and closing at 17:00. It lists 25 December and 1 January as closed unless otherwise announced. Aim for a morning visit and check weather, Park notices and rail services before travel.

A winter visit works best with a morning arrival, a focused route and enough flexibility to change plans. From 15 October to 15 March, the Park's published timetable is 09:00 opening, 15:30 last entry and 17:00 closing. November, December, January and February all fall within that shorter schedule.

Last updated and official sources checked: 10 October 2026. This independent guide helps you plan the day; the Archaeological Park's current timetable and notices control admission.

Does a winter visit fit your trip?

Winter is a reasonable choice if you are comfortable spending time outdoors and can adapt the route to conditions. It is less forgiving of a late arrival: there is no long evening inside the site to recover time lost to a slow journey or an extended lunch.

If you have several days in the Naples area, keep more than one possible Pompeii date until the forecast and transport arrangements are clearer. If you have only one day, decide beforehand what would make you shorten, postpone or abandon the visit. A fixed booking does not make uncomfortable conditions easier to manage.

Do not build the decision around promises of empty ruins or cheaper winter admission. Neither is guaranteed by the season. Choose winter because the available hours and the kind of outdoor visit suit your trip, then check the actual ticket product and date.

Your situation Practical winter plan
You can reach the entrance in the morning Choose a small core route, with optional additions if time and conditions allow
You will arrive shortly before last entry Reassess whether a very limited visit is worth the journey and ticket
Your party needs frequent rests or a facilitated route Plan from the suitable entrance and leave extra time to return
The forecast or Park notices indicate disruption Keep an alternative day or independently checked indoor plan available

Plan around closing, not just last entry

The official winter timetable ends admissions at 15:30 and closes the site at 17:00. Arriving at the admission cutoff leaves only an hour and a half before the published closing time, before allowing for orientation or the walk to your exit.

For a first visit, aim for the morning if your journey allows it. Treat the entrance-to-exit allowance as part of the visit rather than adding it afterward. Individual buildings also have their own opening arrangements, linked from the Park's ticket page, so the site closing time is not a promise that every room remains available until then.

Our Pompeii opening-hours guide covers the full seasonal timetable. Here, the useful decision is how much of the available winter day your transport plan actually leaves inside the ruins.

Check Christmas and New Year separately

The Park lists 25 December and 1 January as closed unless otherwise communicated. Do not infer an opening from a previous year's holiday announcement. Look for a notice covering the precise date and year of your intended visit before arranging transport.

For surrounding dates, check the Park calendar and railway notices as separate tasks. An open archaeological site does not confirm a particular train departure, and an available train does not establish that the Park is open.

Save the relevant confirmation and notices offline. If the information changes, use the current official instruction rather than an older itinerary or screenshot.

Choose a core route and an optional extension

These are editorial planning suggestions, not official timed itineraries. Use the Park map and the day's open-building information to turn them into a route that suits your party.

For Porta Marina or Piazza Esedra, consider starting with the Forum area and nearby open buildings. For Piazza Anfiteatro, consider an amphitheatre-focused start or the facilitated Pompeii for All route, depending on your needs. Choose the entrance for the route, not merely because it appears first in a search result.

Make a short list of priorities and leave the remainder optional. After the core visit, check the time, your energy and the conditions before adding another area. Avoid chasing a faraway house just because it appears on a list of highlights.

Leave enough time to walk back to your intended exit without rushing. The Park regulations describe irregular ancient surfaces, drops and gaps; they also require visitors to follow marked routes. An apparent shortcut behind a barrier is not an alternative exit route.

Keep the food break inside your admission plan

The ticket conditions state that standard Pompeii Express and Pompeii Plus tickets permit one entry and do not allow exit and re-entry. Leaving for lunch in the modern town normally ends the visit on those tickets.

Plan lunch outside after finishing, or use designated eating areas inside. Check the current visitor-services page before depending on a particular refreshment point. Do not assume an older guide's café recommendation is still operating.

For ticket selection and the official booking route, use our Pompeii ticket guide. A winter itinerary should fit the ticket you bought, including its date and entry conditions.

Let the forecast change the route

Check the local forecast before travel and again when deciding whether to set out. Bring clothing and footwear appropriate to that forecast, and be prepared to shorten the outdoor visit if conditions deteriorate. A seasonal description cannot tell you what your specific day will be like.

Follow Park closure notices and staff instructions. The visitor regulations specifically say not to shelter beneath trees during storms. Do not treat a roofed ancient building as a guaranteed refuge or enter a closed area to escape the weather.

For more detail on wet-day choices, see Pompeii in the rain. If you need an indoor alternative, check its own opening hours and ticket availability in advance; switching plans can require a separate booking and a different journey.

Recheck trains before leaving

Winter travel plans should use current service information. As checked on 10 October 2026, EAV announces that Campania Express is suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice. Do not rely on its older tourist timetable for an autumn or winter journey.

Check ordinary EAV services through the railway timetable hub, or assess a mainline journey to Pompei with its onward connection. The Pompeii train-station guide distinguishes the stops and entrances.

Before departure, confirm your outward service, return options, exact station and chosen Park gate. Keep some margin between leaving the ruins and your train. That margin gives you room to finish the walk safely without turning an earlier winter closing into a rushed journey home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pompeii open in winter?▼

Yes. The published winter timetable applies from 15 October to 15 March: opening at 09:00, last entry at 15:30 and closing at 17:00. Check the Park’s notices for exceptional closures or changes.

Is Pompeii open on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day?▼

The Park lists 25 December and 1 January as closed unless otherwise communicated. Only plan a visit on either date if the Park explicitly announces an opening for that date and year.

What time should I arrive at Pompeii in winter?▼

A morning arrival leaves more room for a focused visit, breaks and changes to the route. The 15:30 last-entry time is an admission cutoff, not a recommended start for a full visit.

Can I leave Pompeii for lunch during a winter visit?▼

You can leave, but standard Pompeii Express and Pompeii Plus tickets do not allow re-entry. Plan lunch in town after finishing, or use designated eating areas inside and confirm current visitor services.
