Things to Do in Pompeii Besides the Ruins: 8 Ideas
Beyond the ancient ruins, you can walk modern Pompei and visit its Sanctuary, see Villa Poppaea at Oplontis, the Boscoreale Antiquarium or the Stabiae villas, add the Libero D'Orsi Archaeological Museum, climb Mount Vesuvius, or eat in town. Choose by your ticket, transport and remaining time, and check each site's own opening information, because the archaeological park's timetable does not cover every attraction.
The best things to do in Pompeii besides the ancient ruins are to explore modern Pompei, visit the Sanctuary, choose another Vesuvian archaeological site, or add Vesuvius and local food to your day. The right choice depends on your ticket, transport, opening hours and available time.
“Pompeii” can mean two places: the archaeological site and the modern town of Pompei. They are close to each other but are not the same attraction. The ideas below keep that distinction clear and link to the current official information where access, tickets or schedules can change.
1. Walk through modern Pompei and visit the Sanctuary
Leave the archaeological area for a break in the modern town. Piazza Bartolo Longo and the Pontifical Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Holy Rosary of Pompei give the town a different atmosphere from the excavated Roman city.
This is the simplest option if you have only a short amount of time after the ruins: walk, eat, have coffee, or visit the Sanctuary without adding another distant archaeological site. Check the Sanctuary's own visitor and service information rather than assuming that the archaeological park's timetable applies.
2. See Villa Poppaea at Oplontis
The Archaeological Park's Oplontis site is in modern Torre Annunziata. Villa A, also known as Villa Poppaea, is a large Roman residential complex with preserved decorative remains. The Park identifies Villa B as currently not open to visitors, so do not advertise the two complexes as if both were visitable.
Oplontis suits visitors who want another Roman villa rather than another walk through a city grid. Check the current ticket product, transport route and day-specific opening information before adding it to a Pompeii itinerary.
3. Visit Villa Regina and the Boscoreale Antiquarium
At Boscoreale, the Park presents Villa Regina and the Antiquarium as a way to understand Roman life and the Vesuvian countryside. The museum displays finds from the surrounding excavations and explains the area's agricultural context.
This is a useful choice for visitors who prefer objects, interpretation and a smaller site to another full day of walking. The Park's map and ticket pages show the current access arrangements.
4. Explore the villas of Stabiae
The Stabiae site includes Villa San Marco, Villa Arianna and the Second Complex. The Park notes that only parts of the villas are currently visitable and that they are residential complexes with frescoes, baths, porticoes and gardens.
Stabiae is a better fit for visitors interested in Roman luxury villas and panoramic settings. It is in the Castellammare di Stabia area, so allow for a separate transport leg rather than treating it as an entrance inside Pompeii.
5. Add the Libero D'Orsi Archaeological Museum
The Archaeological Museum of Stabiae “Libero D'Orsi” is housed at Reggia di Quisisana. The Park's directions and transport page lists the museum alongside the Artebus and local transport information.
Choose the museum when you want a more contained visit or want to see material connected with the villas of Stabiae. Confirm the museum's own hours and ticket route; a Pompeii ticket product does not automatically mean that every listed site has identical access conditions.
6. Visit Mount Vesuvius
For a change from archaeology, plan a visit to Vesuvius National Park. The park publishes information about the Great Cono crater route, paths, geology and volcanology. The crater entrance ticket is handled separately and, according to the Park, can only be purchased online.
Do not assume that a Pompeii admission ticket includes the volcano, a transfer or a crater reservation. Check the National Park's route, ticket, weather and access information before booking transport.
7. Eat in modern Pompei or book a Vesuvian food-and-wine experience
Modern Pompei is the practical place to pause for a meal after the archaeological site. You can also research a Vesuvian winery or food experience in the wider area, but verify the operator's address, transport, language, duration and cancellation terms before paying.
Restaurant quality, menus, prices and opening hours change too often for a static “best restaurant” list to be reliable. Treat recommendations as options to check, not guarantees, and keep food or wine plans separate from the Park's admission timetable.
8. Use the Park's other sites and shuttle information to build a multi-site day
The Archaeological Park's map and guide page links maps and guides for Pompeii, Oplontis, Boscoreale and Stabiae. The Pompeii Artebus page explains the shuttle connections between several Park sites and notes that service is subject to availability.
The current Park ticket page lists products that can include combinations of Pompeii, Oplontis, Stabiae, Boscoreale and shuttle services. Read the exact product description: a ticket's included sites, validity and transport terms matter more than an old blog itinerary.
Which option should you choose?
| If you want… | Start with… | Check before leaving |
|---|---|---|
| A short break near the ruins | Modern Pompei and the Sanctuary | Sanctuary opening and service information |
| Another Roman villa | Oplontis or Stabiae | Site hours, Tuesday closures and transport |
| Museum interpretation | Boscoreale Antiquarium or Libero D'Orsi | Museum hours and ticket inclusion |
| A volcanic landscape | Vesuvius National Park | Great Cono ticket, weather and route access |
| Food or wine | Modern Pompei or a booked Vesuvian operator | Address, duration, price and cancellation terms |
Practical checks before adding another activity
- Check the official Pompeii timetable and ticket page for the exact product and date.
- Confirm whether the activity is inside the Park's ticket network or requires a separate booking.
- Allow time for travel between Pompeii, Torre Annunziata, Boscoreale, Stabiae and Vesuvius.
- Check each site's opening hours; secondary sites can have different schedules or weekly closures.
- Keep the archaeological visit flexible because capacity, conservation work and open buildings can change.

Frequently asked questions
Is modern Pompei the same as the Pompeii ruins?
No. Modern Pompei is the town around the archaeological site. The Sanctuary, restaurants, shops and railway connections are in the modern town, while the excavated Roman city is managed by the Archaeological Park.
Can I visit Pompeii and Vesuvius on the same day?
It is possible to plan both, but the visits use separate ticket systems and the travel time depends on the route and transport available. Check the Great Cono reservation, Pompeii's last entry and the transfer time before committing to both.
Which archaeological site is easiest to add to Pompeii?
There is no universal answer. Oplontis, Boscoreale and Stabiae have different locations, hours and transport connections. Start with the Park's current map, ticket product and directions, then choose the site that fits your route rather than an outdated “best” ranking.
Do Pompeii tickets include other attractions?
Some current Park products combine Pompeii with other Vesuvian sites or shuttle services, while others cover only a particular site. Read the exact product description on the official ticket page before assuming that Oplontis, Boscoreale, Stabiae or Vesuvius is included.
