From Sorrento, take an EAV Circumvesuviana train toward Naples and get off at Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri. Choose a departure that lists that stop. The Park's official directions list this stop for the Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra entrances. For the journey back to Sorrento, use a Sorrento-bound service from the same station.

Sorrento to Pompeii: the route at a glance
| Part of the trip | What to use or check |
|---|---|
| Departure station | Sorrento on EAV's Vesuvian network |
| Outbound direction | Naples / Napoli, on a service calling at Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri |
| Stop for the ruins | Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri, near Porta Marina |
| Return direction | Sorrento; check the return timetable before entering the ruins |
| Tickets | Transport and archaeological admission are separate unless a product expressly bundles both |
| Mobility needs | Read EAV's direction-specific station instructions before choosing a train |
“Circumvesuviana” is the name widely used for this part of the EAV network. You do not need to change in Naples for a train that calls at Pompei Scavi. A search for Sorrento to Pompei may show a different station: the Trenitalia station called Pompei is not Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri. Check the full stop name when planning a direct train from Sorrento.
How to take the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento
- Open EAV's live railway timetable page and choose the Vesuvian Napoli–Sorrento line. Check the timetable's validity date and any service notice affecting your travel day.
- Find a Sorrento departure in the Naples direction that calls at Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri. Read the stops for that train rather than assuming every service has the same stopping pattern.
- Buy the appropriate transport ticket through an EAV sales channel. Follow the validation instructions for the ticket or payment method you use.
- Check station displays for the departure platform and any change to the service. Avoid relying on a platform number copied from an old guide.
- Get off at Pompei Scavi and follow signs for the archaeological park. If your tour names a different meeting point, follow the operator's instructions.
The EAV timetable hub warns that operating conditions can cause delays or cancellations. Leave a buffer before a fixed Park entry window or guided-tour start time. Save both the outbound and return information so you can consult it without a mobile connection.
How should you plan the return to Sorrento?
Before entering the ruins, identify a suitable Sorrento-bound departure and a later option in the EAV timetable. Recheck same-day service notices before leaving the Park, and allow time to walk back to Pompei Scavi. A saved timetable is a planning aid; use current station information if the service changes.
How long does the Sorrento to Pompeii train take, and what does it cost?
Use the departure and arrival times for your selected train in the current EAV timetable. That gives the scheduled rail journey. Your full trip also includes reaching Sorrento station, waiting, walking from Pompei Scavi to the entrance and completing admission checks.
For the current ticket price, use EAV's tariff information or ask its ticket office for your exact journey and ticket type. An ordinary EAV ticket and a Campania Express reservation have different conditions. A fare quoted for one does not establish the fare for the other.
For a day trip, compare the complete cost: outward and return transport, Park admission, any guide and luggage storage. A transport bundle is only useful if its stops, travel times and admission arrangements fit the visit you want.
From Pompei Scavi train station to the Pompeii entrance
Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri is the rail stop for the Porta Marina side of the ruins. Follow current signs to the entrance or your booked meeting point. Station-to-gate directions do not establish a step-free route through the archaeological site.
The Park's official ticket offices are at Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra and Piazza Anfiteatro. With an advance ticket, the Park allows you to proceed to the turnstiles with a printed ticket or one shown on your smartphone. Keep the barcode and matching identification ready; entry checks still apply.
The visitor regulations restrict bulky luggage and specify a permitted bag size of 30 × 30 × 15 cm. Arrange storage before joining the entrance queue if your bag exceeds that size. Our Pompeii bag policy and luggage guide covers the decisions to make before travelling.
Is the route from Sorrento wheelchair accessible?
EAV lists Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri as accessible only in the Sorrento direction. That matters on the outward trip: a train coming from Sorrento is travelling toward Naples and normally uses the other platform.
EAV's specific mobility instructions for Pompei Scavi direct a passenger coming from Sorrento to:
- Continue on the Naples-bound train to Villa Regina.
- Use the lifts there to reach the opposite platform.
- Take a Sorrento-bound train back to Pompei Scavi, arriving at the platform with a ramp.
For departure from Pompei Scavi toward Sorrento, EAV says boarding is possible from the ramp-equipped platform. Confirm current lift availability, train access and any assistance with EAV before setting off. The station information page also describes an on-demand transport service for wheelchair passengers in the Naples direction.
Railway accessibility is only part of the visit. The Park directs its Pompeii for All route through Piazza Anfiteatro, rather than treating the Porta Marina side as a universal accessible entrance. Plan the connection from the station to your suitable Park entrance with your party's needs in mind.
Is Campania Express an option for this day trip?
As of the check above, EAV has suspended Campania Express until further notice from 1 October 2026. Older descriptions of reserved seats, departure times or tourist-service amenities do not establish current availability.
EAV says passengers holding Campania Express tickets for journeys after 30 September 2026 can request a refund through its complaint form, supplying the ticket's alphanumeric code. For a purchase through an external sales channel, EAV directs the passenger to that seller for the refund. Read the current suspension notice for the full instructions and any restart announcement.
Planning a day trip from Sorrento
Choose your admission window first, then pick trains that leave enough time for the visit and return. We suggest three to four hours inside Pompeii for a selected first-visit route; that is our planning estimate, not an official minimum. A guided tour, slower pace or suburban-villas visit can change the time you need.
The ancient city opens at 09:00. From 16 March–14 October, the Park lists last entry at 17:30 and closing at 19:00. From 15 October–15 March, last entry is 15:30 and closing is 17:00. The opening-hours guide explains the seasonal change and separate building access times. If you choose a free-admission date, check the first-Sunday entry rules. Travellers comparing departure points can use the Naples-to-Pompeii guide.
A practical sequence is an outward train, the entrance check, a planned walk through the ruins, a break and a return train with some margin. Pick one or two priorities, such as the Forum and open houses on the same route, rather than spending the day crossing the ancient city repeatedly. Use the Pompeii visitor guide for the walking plan and the official-ticket guide for the correct admission category.
Can you add Herculaneum or Mount Vesuvius?
Pompeii and Herculaneum together require separate admission planning, travel between the archaeological sites and time inside both. Mount Vesuvius adds another onward journey and its own access arrangements. For a first visit, we suggest giving Pompeii a substantial part of the day before adding either stop. A tour that advertises several destinations should specify actual visit time at each one.
If you are using Sorrento as a base for the Amalfi Coast as well, keep those travel days distinct unless you have confirmed the connecting services. A map showing nearby destinations cannot tell you whether their timetables fit the same day.
Train, private transfer or organized tour?
| Travel option | When it may suit you | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary EAV train | Independent visit with control over the return time | Calling pattern, timetable, fare, service notices and accessibility |
| Licensed taxi or private transfer | A party needing a particular pickup or help transporting luggage | Written price, exact entrance, return pickup and mobility requirements |
| Organized excursion | Transport and a guided tour arranged together | Pickup, guide language, time in Pompeii, admission inclusion and cancellation terms |
An excursion can make sense when you prefer one coordinated booking. Confirm whether it includes a valid Park entry ticket: “tour Pompeii” or “skip the line” on a listing does not answer that by itself.

Continuing onward after Pompeii
If the trip ends in Naples, Rome or elsewhere rather than back in Sorrento, plan each leg separately. Check luggage storage hours and leave a generous connection margin before a reserved onward train. You can compare onward rail journeys on Omio (affiliate link; we may earn a commission). Verify the operators and changes shown for the complete journey.
