Herculaneum Ruins Visitor Guide
Herculaneum is the compact Vesuvius site to choose for preserved houses, mosaics, frescoes, upper floors and carbonized wood. It is smaller than Pompeii's excavated city, but it rewards close attention rather than a race through a checklist.
The archaeological area sits below the modern town of Ercolano. Access, open buildings and special routes can change as conservation continues, so use the official park site both when planning and again on the day of your visit.
Why Herculaneum is different from Pompeii
Both towns were affected by the AD 79 eruption, but they were buried in different conditions. At Herculaneum, volcanic deposits sealed buildings and organic material in ways that preserved evidence rarely visible at Pompeii. Visitors can encounter carbonized wooden elements, decorated rooms and portions of multi-storey buildings within a relatively concentrated area.

2026 opening hours and tickets
The official Herculaneum ticket page currently publishes these seasonal hours:
- Winter: 08:30–17:00, with last admission at 15:30.
- Summer: 08:30–19:30, with last admission at 18:00 and departure from the archaeological area by 19:00.
The park generally opens Monday through Sunday, but holiday arrangements and extraordinary openings can vary. Always check the dated notice for your visit. Last admission is not the time to begin a full route, and the listed closing time can differ from the deadline to leave the excavated area.
Buy the ticket product shown on the official page or through the official seller it links to. Check reductions and free-admission requirements before purchase and bring any supporting identification. Avoid a reseller page that hides whether it is charging for admission, a guide or both.
Getting to Ercolano Scavi
From central Naples, EAV services on the Napoli–Sorrento corridor serve Ercolano Scavi. Napoli Piazza Garibaldi connects with Napoli Centrale, but they are named as separate station areas. Confirm the current platform, service pattern and return trains with EAV.
The seasonal Campania Express also uses this corridor and offers reserved seating on selected services. EAV says its 2026 season begins on 28 March. Its limited schedule will not fit every admission plan, so compare it with regular local services instead of assuming it is automatically the best choice.
From Ercolano Scavi station, follow the route through the modern town to the archaeological park entrance. Leave time for the walk and for the descent from the modern entrance into the ancient site.
Build a focused route
Open-building notices should determine the final route, but these areas explain what makes Herculaneum distinctive.
Houses and decorated rooms
The House of Neptune and Amphitrite is known for its decorated dining space and mosaic. The House of the Deer shows the scale and organization of an elite residence. Other houses preserve shops, internal courtyards and domestic rooms at close range.
Use the official map and on-site signs for interpretation. A famous house may be temporarily closed while the surrounding streets remain open.
Baths and public life
Bath complexes help connect the domestic buildings to public life in the town. Look at their sequence of rooms, surfaces and services rather than treating them as a single photo stop.
Ancient shoreline area
The structures commonly called the boat chambers stand near the ancient shoreline. Human remains found in this area changed the archaeological understanding of how residents responded to the eruption. Access can be controlled, so check the official park's current route information.
Organic preservation
Wooden elements and other carbonized material are vulnerable archaeological evidence. Barriers and low-light conditions protect objects that survived exceptional burial conditions. Do not touch surfaces or lean across protective boundaries for a photograph.
Practical visitor advice
- Check the official Herculaneum homepage for temporary closures before setting out.
- Save the ticket and any supporting eligibility documents where they are easy to present.
- Wear stable footwear; the modern approach, ramps, steps and ancient surfaces are not uniformly level.
- Carry permitted water and prepare for exposed areas in hot weather.
- Do not assume the compact footprint makes the visit fully accessible. Consult the park's current access information for individual requirements.
- Confirm your return train before entering, then leave a reasonable margin rather than aiming for the final possible service.
Herculaneum and Pompeii on the same day
A same-day visit is possible using the rail corridor, but each park has its own ticket, operating hours and closure notices. Combining them means a fixed transfer in the middle of the day and less time for open houses at both sites.
If you do combine them, reserve each admission separately, check the EAV schedule, and choose only a few priorities at each park. Do not add a Vesuvius crater reservation to the same itinerary. Most visitors will understand more by giving one site a substantial visit and returning to the other on a separate day.

Does a Pompeii ticket include Herculaneum?
