Pompeii, Italy: Complete Visitor's Guide for 2026

For a first visit to Pompeii, plan four to six hours, arrive for the official 09:00 opening if you want cooler conditions, and choose the €25 ticket if the suburban villas matter to you. Why Pompeii matters

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE buried Pompeii and other settlements around the Bay of Naples. Excavation revealed streets, houses, shops, baths, places of worship, public buildings, inscriptions, mosaics, and wall paintings that preserve evidence of urban life across social classes.

Pompeii forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Archaeological Areas of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata.” It is an active archaeological and conservation site, so access to individual buildings changes.

Tickets without the sales noise

VivaTicket is the Park's exclusive official online seller, and official entrance ticket offices also operate. Mobile and printed PDF tickets are accepted.

The current products are:

• Pompeii Express — €20: ancient city, one day.
• Pompeii with suburban villas — €25: ancient city plus the villas and Boscoreale locations listed by the Park, one day.
• Grande Pompei — €30: wider Park network, three consecutive days, including the published shuttle.
• MyPompeii — €45: annual product under the Park's conditions.

The official reduced admission is €2 for eligible EU visitors aged 18 to under 25. Free and reduced categories require the documents specified by the Park.

Tickets are named and tied to a date and time. Identification may be checked. The Park does not publish a fixed release hour or promise a separate allocation to a particular reseller. Pompeii and Herculaneum do not share a standard official combined admission product.

Choosing an entrance

Porta Marina

Useful for travelers arriving at Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri. It gives direct access toward the western city and Forum area.

Piazza Anfiteatro

Useful for the eastern districts, amphitheatre, and the designated accessible route. It can support a route that moves west through the city.

Piazza Esedra

Useful for some groups and approaches from the modern town. Date-specific operations can affect entrances, so check the Park notice rather than relying on a permanent “quietest gate” claim.

How much can you see?

Two to three hours

Choose a compact route around the Forum, one bath complex, one or two open houses, and a theatre or the amphitheatre. This is a highlights visit, not a complete tour.

Four to six hours

This is the best range for most first visits. You can connect civic spaces, domestic buildings, commercial streets, and either the theatres or eastern city without rushing every stop.

A full day

A longer visit suits archaeology enthusiasts, photographers, and visitors using the suburban-villa ticket. Plan breaks; ancient paving and exposure to sun or rain make the site physically demanding.

What to prioritize

Open-building schedules decide what is actually possible. Strong route anchors include the Forum, theatres, amphitheatre, baths, Via dell'Abbondanza, and a selection of domestic buildings. The Villa of the Mysteries requires the applicable ticket and adds walking time.

Transport planning

From Naples or Sorrento, EAV services on the Naples–Sorrento corridor serve Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri. Trenitalia services to Pompei town can suit Piazza Anfiteatro. From Rome, connect through Naples and leave a buffer between operators.

Check live timetables and disruption notices. A rail service, platform, journey time, or fare can change; no single connection is mandatory for visiting the Park.

Visitor rules that affect planning

The Park's official regulations include these practical points:

• bags larger than 30 × 30 × 15 cm are not permitted;
• organized groups may contain no more than 35 people;
• ticket names and concession documents may be checked;
• ordinary ticket changes and refunds are not available, apart from published extraordinary-closure circumstances;
• archaeological surfaces, walls, frescoes, and closed areas must be respected.

Accessibility and families

Piazza Anfiteatro connects with the “Pompeii for All” route, designed to improve access across part of the ancient city. Pompeii still contains steep gradients, gaps, irregular stone, and areas that cannot be made step-free. Check the Park's current accessibility information and tell a guide or tour provider about specific requirements before booking.

Families should choose a shorter route, carry water, schedule breaks, and prepare children for human remains and casts that may be emotionally difficult.

Guide or independent visit?

Choose a licensed guide when context, a specialist subject, accessibility, or efficient navigation matters most. Visit independently when you prefer a flexible pace and are comfortable using the official map.

Prices and inclusions vary by provider. Confirm the guide's license, language, group size, duration, cancellation policy, meeting point, and whether a valid named Park ticket is included. “Skip the line” is not a substitute for admission.
