Where Is Pompeii? And Why Two Stations Share the Name
Ancient Pompeii is in Campania in southern Italy, beside the modern city of Pompei and southeast of Naples. On a map, search for Parco Archeologico di Pompei rather than using “Pompeii” alone. That avoids being routed to the modern city centre, a hotel, or the wrong railway station.
The archaeological site has three official entrances—Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra, and Piazza Anfiteatro—and more than one station can be part of a valid route. Choose the station and entrance together.
Ancient Pompeii and modern Pompei are not the same place
The spelling is a useful clue:
- Pompeii commonly refers to the ancient Roman city and archaeological park.
- Pompei is the modern Italian municipality beside the ruins.
They are adjacent, not separated by a long transfer, but a map result for central Pompei is not automatically the gate you need. The same distinction explains why train searches show several similar station names.
Which location should you put into a map?
Use one of these official entrance names as your destination:

The Archaeological Park recommends Piazza Esedra for the Antiquarium. Current building access can change, so an entrance does not guarantee that every nearby house or exhibition is open.
Which Pompeii train station is correct?
There is no single correct station for every route.
Pompei Villa dei Misteri
This EAV stop is on the Napoli–Sorrento line and serves Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra. Many visitors arriving from central Naples use it because it is beside the archaeological park's western entrances.
Pompei Santuario
This stop is on the Napoli–Poggiomarino EAV line. The Park lists it for Piazza Anfiteatro, on the opposite side of the ancient city.
Pompei
This Trenitalia station serves the modern city. The Park's official directions list the Pompei Link connection between the station and the archaeological park. It is a valid route, but it is not the same stop as Pompei Villa dei Misteri.

Where is Pompeii relative to Naples and Rome?
Pompeii is in the Naples metropolitan area of Campania, near Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. Naples is the usual transport hub. From Rome, the resilient public-transport plan is a high-speed train to Napoli Centrale followed by the local connection that matches your chosen entrance.

How to avoid the common map mistakes
- Search for the archaeological park or a named entrance, not only “Pompeii.”
- Match the station to the entrance. Pompei, Pompei Santuario, and Pompei Villa dei Misteri are different stops.
- Save the official map offline. Mobile coverage and battery life should not be your only navigation plan.
- Check open buildings. Conservation can change the best route inside the site.
- Keep the ticket separate from transport. A train ticket does not include archaeological park admission.
