Best Time to Visit Pompeii: Weather, Hours, and Crowds

For most travelers, the best time to visit Pompeii is a weekday in spring or autumn, entering at 09:00. Those seasons usually avoid the most intense summer heat while retaining useful daylight. Winter can be quieter but has shorter official hours and a greater risk that rain affects an exposed visit.

There is no universally “empty” month or guaranteed quiet hour. School trips, holidays, cruise schedules, events, and weather can change a day quickly. Use this guide to choose the best tradeoff for you.

Spring

Spring is a strong general choice because walking conditions can be more comfortable than midsummer. The longer Park timetable begins March 16, but daylight and temperature do not change instantly on that date.

Check rain and wind forecasts, carry a light layer, and avoid assuming that every house will be open. Easter periods, public holidays, and school visits can increase demand.

Summer

Summer offers the longest published opening hours but also the greatest heat exposure. Pompeii has open streets, limited shade on many routes, and reflective stone surfaces.

Enter at 09:00, carry water, use sun protection, and plan a route with breaks. A 17:30 last admission does not leave time for a normal four-to-six-hour first visit. Later entry works only for a deliberately compact route.

Do not buy a premium tour solely because it promises a special early opening or guaranteed allocation. Confirm the exact Park ticket, named time, and meeting conditions before payment.

Autumn

Early autumn can still feel like summer. Later autumn often brings more comfortable walking conditions, while the shorter timetable begins October 15.

Autumn is a good fit for visitors who value moderate conditions over the longest possible day. Keep rain protection available and check the sunset time if you are traveling onward after closing.

Winter

Winter can reward flexible travelers, but Pompeii closes at 17:00 with last admission at 15:30. Rain can make ancient surfaces slippery, and daylight is limited.

Choose a dry forecast if possible, wear shoes with grip, and keep a compact route ready. December 25 and January 1 are the standard official closure dates; May 1 is not listed as a standard annual closure on the current ticket page.

Morning or afternoon?

Entering at 09:00

Opening time is the safest default for heat management and a full route. You also have more flexibility if a priority house is closed or a path takes longer than expected.

Afternoon entry

Afternoon can work for a shorter visit, especially in the longer season. Calculate from closing time backward: allow at least three hours for a highlights route and four to six for a first visit. Last admission only marks the final entry time.

No published data supports a precise universal “least crowded” minute. Treat charts that promise exact crowd levels as estimates, not facts.

Tickets and timing

Current official admission starts at €20 for Pompeii Express. The one-day product with suburban villas is €25, Grande Pompei is €30 for three consecutive days, and MyPompeii is €45 annually. Eligible EU visitors aged 18 to under 25 pay €2 under the official reduced rules.
