There is no single best gate for everyone. Your arrival station, access needs, tour meeting point, and luggage collection matter more than a promise of shorter queues. The Park's official directions identify three public entrances: Porta Marina on Via Villa dei Misteri, Piazza Esedra at Piazza Porta Marina Inferiore, and Piazza Anfiteatro at Piazza Immacolata.

Which entrance matches your train station?
Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri: Porta Marina or Piazza Esedra
This is the Circumvesuviana station associated with Pompeii on the Napoli–Sorrento line. The Park's directions pair it with Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra. Use your ticket or tour meeting instructions to decide between them, then confirm the entrance on the Park map.
If you want to start with the Antiquarium, the Park recommends Piazza Esedra. If you need luggage storage, Porta Marina is one of the two locations currently listed by the Park. Those are practical reasons to choose a gate.
Pompei Santuario: Piazza Anfiteatro
The Park pairs Pompei Santuario, on the Circumvesuviana Napoli–Poggiomarino line, with Piazza Anfiteatro. This is a different line and station from Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri. Check the destination and stopping pattern before boarding.
Pompei town station: plan the onward connection
Trenitalia's Pompei station serves the Napoli–Salerno railway. Do not mistake it for Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri when buying a ticket or planning a tour meeting time.
The Park lists Pompei Link, a combined train-and-bus connection between Pompei station and the archaeological park, with a stated connection time of about 15 minutes. Check the current operator timetable and drop-off point. If walking instead, use a current map to choose a gate and allow time for your party's pace. Which entrance should wheelchair users or families with strollers use?
Piazza Anfiteatro is the official starting point for Pompeii for All. The route runs for more than 3.5 kilometres toward the Sanctuary of Venus along the main streets of the ancient city. It is intended for people with mobility difficulties, families with buggies, and visitors who prefer an easier route.
The Park's accessibility guidance also describes limitations:
- Some ramps and slopes exceed an 8% incline.
- Small, sudden changes in height occur, typically below 5 cm.
- Sections retain ancient, uneven paving.
- Pavements and crossings lack wheel stoppers.
- Two wheelchairs can pass side by side only in some sections.
Some visitors may therefore need assistance. Check the current accessibility map and ask the Park about your specific mobility equipment and route before travel.

The official ticket-information page describes returning to Piazza Anfiteatro or potentially leaving through Piazza Esedra using the Antiquarium lift. Confirm the lift and exit arrangements on the day before committing to that route.
Can you store luggage at the entrance?
The Park currently lists paid luggage storage at Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro. It does not list a storage service at Piazza Esedra. The visitor-services page states that bags, backpacks, luggage, and cases larger than 30 × 30 × 15 cm are not allowed inside the excavations.
Check storage opening times, capacity, price, and collection arrangements directly. Do not assume a bag can be collected at another gate. If you leave belongings near one entrance, include the return journey in your visit plan.
Should you change entrances to avoid a queue?
No entrance is guaranteed to have the shortest queue. Conditions can change after train arrivals, with group visits, or when access arrangements change.
The Park recommends advance ticket purchase to speed up entry. Its guidance says advance buyers can present a printed or mobile PDF ticket at the turnstiles. Buying ahead does not establish that security checks or entry queues disappear. Choose a gate that suits your journey and leave time for the entry process.

Plan your exit as well as your entrance
A one-way walk can suit a visitor arriving on one side of the site and leaving from another. Returning to the same gate can be the better option when you have parked nearby, stored luggage, or booked a return transfer. Neither pattern is always more efficient.
Before entering:
- Confirm the entrance and meeting point shown on any tour instructions.
- Locate your preferred sights and available route on the current Park map.
- Choose an exit that works with your return transport and luggage collection.
- Ask staff about current closures, accessible exits, and any facilities you need.
The Park's standard single-entry tickets do not permit exit and re-entry using the same ticket. Finish your visit before passing through an exit; do not plan to leave for luggage or lunch and return on the same admission.
