Pompeii Free Entry Days 2026: Dates & Rules

Quick answer

Pompeii is free for everyone on the first Sunday of every month under Italy's Domenica al Museo programme. On free Sundays you cannot book online: go straight to the turnstiles. Pompeii free entry days in 2026 are the first Sunday of each month. Admission is free for everyone under Italy's Domenica al Museo programme. On those free Sundays, the Archaeological Park says that tickets cannot be booked or bought online: visitors go directly to the turnstiles, without a named ticket or a visit to the ticket office.

The free day still has a 20,000-admission daily limit. Free entry therefore does not guarantee admission if the site reaches capacity. On ordinary paid days, visitors under 18 enter free under the Ministry of Culture's national concessions. The Park currently lists Pompeii Express at €20, Pompeii+ at €25 and a €2 reduced tariff for EU citizens aged 18 to under 25; check the official timetable and ticket page before travelling because prices and access arrangements can change.

Last checked: 12 October 2026. The Park's notices take precedence if they change after this guide was updated.

Pompeii free entry at a glance

Question Short answer
Is Pompeii free? Yes, for everyone on the first Sunday of every month.
Can I book a free-Sunday ticket online? No. The Park says to enter directly through the turnstiles.
Is there a visitor limit? Yes. The current daily limit is 20,000 admissions.
Is Pompeii free for children? Visitors under 18 qualify for free admission on ordinary days under the national concessions.
Is every Sunday free? No. The recurring public free day is the first Sunday of the month.
Where should I verify the rule? The Park's official ticket page and the Ministry of Culture's concessions page.

Should you choose a free Sunday or a paid day?

Your priority Planning choice What to check
Save the standard admission fee First Sunday of the month Direct turnstile entry and capacity; no online reservation
Coordinate a fixed train or guided-tour meeting Compare an ordinary paid day Ticket date, time window, entrance and tour confirmation
Use an age or other concession Check ordinary-day eligibility first Required identity documents and ticket procedure

Free admission does not reserve space or include a guided tour. If your trip allows only one Pompeii visit, choose the date after checking both admission rules and transport; an online reseller listing cannot override the Park's free-day procedure.

2026 first-Sunday free dates

The recurring 2026 dates are:

Month Free admission date
January January 4, 2026
February February 1, 2026
March March 1, 2026
April April 5, 2026
May May 3, 2026
June June 7, 2026
July July 5, 2026
August August 2, 2026
September September 6, 2026
October October 4, 2026
November November 1, 2026
December December 6, 2026

These dates follow the first-Sunday programme. Before setting out, check the Ministry's Domenica al Museo calendar and the Park's own notice for exceptional changes, opening details or access instructions.

How free-Sunday entry works

The Park's specific free-admission notice gives three important rules:

  1. Booking rule: there is no online booking; a free-Sunday visitor cannot make an online purchase or reservation through VivaTicket.
  2. Direct and immediate access: visitors go to an entrance and pass through the turnstiles without first collecting a ticket at the ticket office.
  3. No named ticket on the free day: the Park's ordinary named-ticket rule does not apply to these free-admission days.

In short, access is direct and immediate at the entrance, subject to the daily capacity and any current Park notice.

The visitor cap remains in force. The current visitor regulations publish these entry windows and allocations:

Season First entry window Second entry window Published allocation
16 March–14 October 9:00 am–1:00 pm 1:00 pm–5:30 pm 15,000 / 5,000
15 October–15 March 9:00 am–1:00 pm 1:01 pm–3:30 pm 15,000 / 5,000

These are capacity rules, not a guaranteed arrival slot. The Park may change arrangements for safety, conservation or exceptional circumstances. Arriving early can reduce the risk of missing the available capacity, but no guide can promise a particular queue time or admission outcome.

Who can enter free on ordinary days?

The first Sunday is not the only way to visit without paying the standard adult price:

  • Visitors under 18: the Ministry of Culture says admission to state museums and archaeological areas is free for visitors who have not turned 18. Visitors under 12 must be accompanied.
  • EU citizens aged 18 to under 25: the Park currently lists a €2 reduced ticket on ordinary days, subject to the applicable identity and eligibility rules.
  • Other concessions and exemptions: the Ministry lists categories such as eligible EU tourist guides, ICOM members, and certain teaching staff and students. Disability-related concessions also have documentation requirements. Check the current Ministry rules and ask the Park ticket office what documents are accepted for your case.

Bring the identity or eligibility document required for the category. A year-round concession is different from the first-Sunday free-admission system: do not assume that the booking, ticket or documentation process is identical.

Which Pompeii entrance can I use?

The Park lists three entrances to the archaeological area:

Entrance Practical context
Porta Marina Superiore Western entrance on the Forum side of the site.
Porta Marina Inferiore (Piazza Esedra) Lower western entrance; the Park recommends it for access to the Antiquarium.
Piazza Anfiteatro Southeastern entrance and the starting point for the Park's “Pompeii for All” accessible route.

The official excavation-visit guide is the best source for current access information. Choose the entrance that fits your transport and route; published information does not support a guaranteed “fastest gate” on a free Sunday.

Free Sunday or a paid visit?

Free Sunday is useful if saving the admission fee is your priority and your plans can accommodate a busy day with capacity controls. A paid day may be easier to plan because the Park publishes online ticket options and the ordinary ticket page provides the current prices and validity rules.

For comprehensive visit planning and logistics:

Remember that free admission covers entry, not transport, food, luggage storage or a guided tour. The Park also warns that the archaeological area has uneven surfaces and that routes and individual buildings can change. Check the official visitor information before relying on a particular itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pompeii free to visit?

Yes. The Park lists a free ticket every first Sunday of the month as part of Domenica al Museo. The rule is for all visitors, subject to the Park's daily capacity and any exceptional notice.

Can I buy a free Pompeii ticket online?

No. The Park's free-admission notice says that online booking and purchase are not available on these days. Go directly to a site entrance and use the turnstiles; no named ticket is issued for the free day.

Is Pompeii free for children every day?

Visitors who have not turned 18 qualify for free admission under the Ministry of Culture's national concessions. Visitors under 12 must be accompanied. Bring proof of age and verify the current procedure with the Park.

Is Pompeii free every Sunday?

No. The recurring free-admission day is the first Sunday of the month. Other free openings may be announced separately by the Ministry or the Park, so check the official calendars rather than assuming that a later Sunday is free.

What happens if the free-day capacity is reached?

The 20,000-admission daily limit still applies. The Park can control access when capacity or safety limits require it, so admission is not guaranteed simply because the date is a free Sunday. Check the Park's current notice and plan a backup day if entry is essential.

Where can I check the latest Pompeii free-entry information?

Start with the Park's timetable and ticket page, the Park's free-admission notice, and the Ministry of Culture's Domenica al Museo page. Those sources take precedence over third-party schedules.
