Which Pompeii ticket should you buy?

Choose Pompeii Express for the ancient city alone. Choose Pompeii Plus if your plan includes the Villa of the Mysteries or the other suburban sites in that product. Choose the three-day network ticket only if you will use its additional sites within the validity period.

A standard entry ticket does not automatically include a guided tour, audio guide or travel from Naples or Sorrento. The shuttle named in the wider Park products is a different service from transport to Pompeii.

Pompeii Express or Plus: the €5 decision

If you already know you want to visit the suburban villas, Plus costs €5 more than Express at the published adult tariff. An Express holder who adds the Park's €8 suburban-villas supplement later pays €28 in total, compared with €25 for Plus. That is a €3 difference before any separate booking charges.

The supplement is sold by card only at the start of the route at Porta Ercolano, the Herculaneum Gate / Street of the Tombs entrance. It is not a standalone admission ticket. The Park lists the route's last entrance there as 17:30 in summer and 15:30 in winter. Choosing Plus does not extend those hours.

How to book tickets online through VivaTicket

1. Open the Park's official timetable and ticket page and follow its current purchase link.
2. Choose the ticket product, visit date and available entry time slot. Compare included sites with your actual itinerary.
3. Select the correct adult, reduced or free-entry category. Bring the documents needed to establish eligibility.
4. Enter each visitor's name as required. Check names and date carefully: the Park's individual-ticket rules do not allow those details to be changed.
5. Review the total, including any booking fee and optional services, before paying.
6. Save the ticket PDF or barcode offline. The Park permits an advance ticket to be printed or shown on a smartphone.

At the entrance, advance buyers can proceed to the turnstiles as directed. Admission and identity checks still apply. A “skip the line” label should not be read as permission to bypass security, arrive outside your ticket window or ignore a tour's meeting time. When do tickets go on sale, and how far ahead should you book?

The Park's general ticket page does not establish one fixed release schedule for all dates. Use the live official calendar to see whether your date and product are available. An unavailable date alone does not tell you whether it has sold out, has not been released or is affected by a special arrangement.

For a fixed travel date, book once you have confirmed your transport and the ticket terms. The Park publishes a daily limit of 20,000 entries. From 16 March to 14 October, it divides admissions as follows:

These are capacity limits, not live availability. A product can have different inventory from another product in the same window.

Named tickets, ID, refunds and changes

The Park's regulations for visitors state that individual tickets are personal and non-transferable, identify the holder and specify the entry day and time slot. Staff may ask for an identity document at entry or during the visit.

If the ticket name and visitor do not match, the regulations say entry will be refused without a refund. They also say the name and visit date cannot be modified, and that tickets are not refundable except in the event of extraordinary closure of the Park. Check those details before committing to a date or buying for another person.

An accredited tour operator can use a group ticket under the Park's separate group rules. That does not make an informal resale ticket transferable. If you buy a package, read both the operator's cancellation terms and the admission arrangements; do not assume a refundable tour automatically makes an individual Park ticket refundable.

Can you buy Pompeii tickets at the entrance?

Yes, the Park lists on-site ticket offices at Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra and Piazza Anfiteatro, inside the archaeological entrance areas. Its regulations permit purchase there with a valid identification document. Advance booking is recommended by the Park, but the published rules do not make every visit online-only.

Gate sales depend on remaining capacity and the available products. A queue at a ticket office does not reserve a place, and the existence of that office does not prove that tickets remain after the online calendar changes.

Reduced tickets and free admission

The tariff lists €2 admission for EU citizens aged 18 to under 25. It also extends that reduced tariff to qualifying non-EU holders of an Italian residence permit issued for the reasons identified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Check eligibility and required documents on the official page before choosing the reduced category.
