Pompeii's permitted bag size is 30 x 30 x 15 cm. The Park lists paid luggage storage at Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro. Arrange storage before entering if your bag is too large; do not assume every entrance or train station has a suitable facility.

Last updated: 10 October 2026. Bag rules and Park storage locations were checked against the official visitor regulations and visitor-services page. PompeiiItaly.org is an independent visitor guide.

What is the Pompeii bag size limit?

Article 5 of the Park's regulations prohibits entry with suitcases, bulky bags and other cumbersome objects, gives the permitted size as 30 x 30 x 15 cm, and directs visitors to leave oversized items in the left-luggage area.

Measure the bag after packing, including filled outside pockets. A bag marketed as a daypack or camera bag is not automatically small enough, and a capacity in litres does not establish its dimensions. The approximate equivalent is 12 x 12 x 6 inches; use the centimetre limit when checking a borderline bag.

What you are carrying What to do before arrival
Small bag within 30 x 30 x 15 cm Check its contents against the visitor regulations
Oversized backpack, suitcase or bulky item Arrange storage and confirm the facility accepts it
Professional camera or audio equipment Check the Park's authorization requirements
Stroller or mobility equipment Check the accessible route and equipment-specific arrangements

The published size limit is the rule to plan around. Measure your bag before travelling and leave time to store it if necessary.

Where is official luggage storage available?

The Park's visitor-services page lists paid luggage storage at Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro. It does not list a storage service at Piazza Esedra.

Entrance Storage information published by the Park
Porta Marina Paid luggage storage listed
Piazza Anfiteatro Paid luggage storage listed
Piazza Esedra No storage service listed on the cited services page

Before relying on either service, confirm the current charge, accepted bag sizes, capacity, opening time and collection deadline. A published storage location does not guarantee space for your suitcase on the day. Check overnight-storage requests directly rather than assuming a daytime service can hold bags after closing.

Keep the collection details and any receipt accessible during your visit. Ask where you must return for your bag; do not assume it can be transferred to another entrance.

Match luggage collection to your exit and onward journey

Choose storage with the whole journey in mind. An entrance that suits your outward train may be inconvenient if you plan to leave the ruins on the opposite side or continue to a different town.

Before leaving a bag:

  1. Confirm the facility's address and collection point.
  2. Check the collection deadline against your expected visit length.
  3. Allow time to reach the storage point from your intended exit.
  4. Keep enough margin for your onward train or booked transfer.

The Park's standard single-entry tickets do not allow exit and re-entry. Keep your ticket, identification, medication and other essentials with you. Do not leave something in storage that you expect to retrieve halfway through the visit and then return inside on the same admission.

Our entrance comparison explains how the gates connect with transport and accessibility needs. The opening-hours guide helps with the return-time calculation; storage hours must still be checked separately.

Can you store a suitcase at a train station or hotel?

Check a specific provider before bringing a suitcase to Pompeii. A map result labelled “station luggage storage” may refer to a nearby business rather than a service inside the station. Verify the address, staffed hours, accepted dimensions, price, booking terms and collection procedure.

The stations are different places: Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri is on the EAV Naples–Sorrento line, while Pompei is the separate Trenitalia station in town. Make sure a storage booking matches your actual arrival and return route.

If you are returning to the same accommodation, ask whether it can hold your larger luggage while you visit. If continuing elsewhere, compare the storage location with your onward route before choosing it. A facility in Naples can be useful only if returning to Naples fits that route.

For a tour or private transfer, obtain the operator's luggage policy. Confirm whether belongings can remain on the vehicle, whether the return uses the same vehicle and when you can retrieve them. A transport booking does not itself promise luggage storage.

What should you keep in your small day bag?

Pack around your needs and the forecast while staying within the permitted dimensions. Useful items include drinking water, your ticket saved offline, the identification required for admission, essential medication, sun or rain protection and a charged phone with the route saved.

Use the Park map and current visitor-services information to locate drinking-water points. Follow signs identifying water for drinking, and turn taps off after use as the regulations require. Do not assume every ancient basin is a functioning refill point.

If carrying food, plan where to eat it. Article 5 prohibits eating outside specially designated places. Check the current picnic locations and follow signs rather than using an ancient building or monument as a lunch stop.

Cameras, drones and other equipment

The bag limit does not override restrictions on what is inside it. The visitor regulations prohibit weapons, knives and explosives, and set separate rules for professional optical or audio equipment.

Professional or commercial photography and filming require formal authorization from the Park. Drone use also requires appropriate authorization. Check equipment such as tripods, monopods and selfie sticks with the Park before bringing it; the cited regulations do not provide a blanket permission for those items.

The Park also restricts audio guides to those supplied by official concessionaires or duly authorized providers. Check that condition before buying an audio product for use inside the site.

Strollers and mobility equipment need a separate route plan

The Pompeii for All itinerary starts at Piazza Anfiteatro and is intended for visitors with mobility difficulties, families with buggies and people who prefer a more manageable route. It does not make every entrance or ancient street equally accessible.

The Park warns of slopes, uneven surfaces and changes in height, with assistance potentially needed in some sections. Check the official route guidance for your equipment and your party. Keep essential belongings accessible while planning how to carry them.

Before you leave for Pompeii

  • Measure the packed bag against 30 x 30 x 15 cm.
  • Confirm storage for any larger item, including cost and collection deadline.
  • Save the facility address and plan the route from your chosen exit.
  • Keep your ticket, identification and essentials with you.
  • Check current Park notices and the terms of any commercial storage booking.

Use our official ticket guide for admission rules and Naples to Pompeii guide for the railway choices. Storage and transport should fit the same plan as your entrance and walking route.
